Serving North Kohala

FOOD SUSTAINABILITY through FOOD PRESERVATION
St. Augustine's partners with Kapanaia Farm, the Kohala Resource & Community Center, the Kohala Resilience Hub, and the Kohala Food Hub to teach food canning workshops. Participants learn two different techniques of preserving food (water bath and pressure canning), with an emphasis on safety to ensure the product is safe to eat and equipment is used safely.

The workshop is free of charge, and the skills learned allow our community to make use of the abundance of fruits, vegetables, and proteins the island provides.

Community members trained through our workshops have formed Kohala Ono Foods Hui, a group that gathers to can food regularly. Through our grant-funded workshops, the hui produced enough delicious canned food to distribute to local families through Kohala Cares. Recipients enjoyed beef stew, chicken soup, vegetable soup, salsa, spiced carrots, orange marmalade, and calamansi marmalade. They also received information on the next round of workshops to encourage more to learn these essential skills toward improving our island's food sustainability.

COMMUNITY MEAL
Our partner in food sustainability, Kohala Cares, helps us offer a community meal periodically. Food is lovingly prepared an served by St. Augustine's volunteers and community members. We gather to share a meal and enjoy the company of friends and neighbors.
ST. AUGUSTINE'S ANNUAL BAZAAR
In addition to being a fundraiser, our annual bazaar also serves as a great community outreach and a time for all in the Kohala community to gather for fun and fellowship. Our members work hard to host this event, offering affordable goods and ono food.
CHRISTMAS AND HOLIDAY PROJECTS
  • Little Free Pantry: St. Augustine's works to supply a food pantry in Kapa‘au with nutritious foods available at any hour for those in need.
  • Salvation Army Bell Ringers: St. Augustine provides volunteer bell ringers at Takata Store during the Christmas season.
  • Keiki Giving Spree:  We sponsor a keiki "giving spree" when children come and shop for their ‘ohana at our Thrift Store. Children learn the value of gift giving as they carefully select gifts for members of their family. We provide shopping help and free gift wrapping.
CREATION CARE
St. Augustine's was the first church in Hawaii to commit to the two-year Green Faith program. The program's mission is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people of diverse religious backgrounds for environmental leadership. We believe protecting the 'āina is a moral responsibility.

Three core values guide this important work and define the organization: Spirit, Stewardship, & Environmental Justice. We did audits in all three areas and chose priorities in these areas. The following are some of the Green Faith activities we have accomplished:
  • Spirit - We celebrate Holy Eucharist at Keokea Park or Kapa'a Beach Park and hold prayers at the peace pole in front of our church campus.
  • Stewardship - FOOD:  We have hosted ethnic cooking classes to teach participants how to make sushi, pancit, and laulau. WASTE:  HI-5 and recycling collections. Food scraps are collected after fellowship and events to feed animals or to use as compost.
  • Environmental Justice - We have assisted local hunting and fishing clubs/individuals to help support hunting and fishing issues. Our deacon has met with middle school students who are working on these issues.
COMMUNITY USE OF OUR FACILITIES
