Ministry opportunities for all members
Acolytes
Acolytes light and extinguish the altar candles, lead the procession as crucifer, hold the book for the reading of the Gospel, and help the priest prepare for communion. Altar Guild The Altar Guild is responsible for the care of linens, vestments for clergy and servers, brass, silver, and candles. They prepare the altar for services and acquire and arrange the altar flowers. This is an important behind-the-scenes ministry that requires in-depth training and a deep commitment to the care of the sanctuary and altar. Eucharistic Ministers The eucharistic minister helps the priest prepare the altar for the Eucharist. He or she will read the prayers of the people, and administer the chalice at communion. Lay Readers Lay Readers read the Scripture assigned for each service. Lay Eucharistic Visitors Members of the congregation who have received special training from the Diocese of Hawai'i visit those who are hospitalized or homebound. During these visits, they share the Gospel of the day, summarize the sermon, pray, and share Holy Communion. |
Music
St. Augustine’s offers uplifting and stirring music at each service through our music program directed by Kirk Corey. Some of our service music is sung in Hawaiian, deepening our cultural connections to this place and honoring the Hawaiian leaders whose devotion to the Anglican Church forged a special bond between the Church and the Hawaiian people. In addition to music on Sundays, Kirk and Vicar Jennifer gather musicians from around the Kohala community to offer free concerts at St. Augustine's. Be sure to check our calendar and newsletter for upcoming concerts! We dearly miss Mila Polevia, who served as our music director for nearly seven years. He was well-known in Kohala and beyond for his vocal and instrumental talents, and we are grateful for the music he wrote especially for St. Augustine's, which we continue to sing each Sunday. |
