Welcoming all, no exceptions.
"As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to be living examples of mercy and compassion, justice and righteousness, faith and hope."
- The Rt. Rev. Robert Fitzpatrick, Bishop, The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i
Most of all, we are called to give the gift of love. No gift is greater! In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, "A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
The marginalized among us are more vulnerable than ever. Living as Jesus taught us, our love and radical welcome can permeate our community in times of need. We have committed to living into our faith by being "a place to BE the love of God and to FEEL the love of God." To take action on that mission, we welcome all. We seek to create the unity of God's beloved community, to whom all belong as a basic human right.
St. Augustine's actively welcomes people as a sanctuary church — an inclusive and safe gathering place for all. Creating unity in our beloved community means creating a living sanctuary in our hearts and on our church campus. We affirm our LGBTQ+ community. We advocate for the kānaka maoli, who still suffer the unjust wounds of colonialism. We create safety for immigrants. We serve the North Kohala community both inside and outside the church walls, building and strengthening partnerships to address injustice, loneliness, food insecurity, lack of health care, environmental sustainability, and economic challenges.
To learn more about inclusivity and unity in The Episcopal Church, please watch The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde's homily, offered at the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the National Cathedral on January 21, 2025. You can read the full text of her homily, and a special message about her homily from our bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i, the Rt. Rev. Robert Fitzpatrick.
