Holy Week & Easter

Come to St. Augustine's to deepen your spiritual life during Holy Week and Easter.
Palm Sunday - We journey into Jerusalem waving our palms with love to herald Jesus' arrival but then confront accusation, denial, judgment, violence, and death. It is a day of stark contrast as we reflect on how these themes play out in ourselves and in the world today.
Maundy Thursday -
The term "Maundy" comes from the Latin word "mandatum," which means commandment or mandate. We gather to hear the commandment Jesus gave the disciples on the night of the Last Supper "to love one another as I have loved you." It was on this night, three days before his resurrection, that Jesus established the eucharist: the holy meal through which we remember, give thanks for, and are united in his love for us.
Good Friday - We follow Jesus through his journey to the cross. It is a holy and solemn day of contemplation. Join us for a quiet walk in the labyrinth on the front lawn during the day and for a music-filled service of contemplation in the evening as we remember the crucifixion of Jesus.
Easter Vigil - Historically, this liturgy is the first celebration of Easter. This special evening includes:
  • The Service of Light (kindling of new fire, lighting the Paschal candle, the singing of the Exsultet)
  • The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms, canticles, and prayers)
  • Holy Baptism or reaffirmation of baptismal vows
  • Holy Eucharist
Easter Sunday - We celebrate Christ's resurrection, embrace opportunities for our renewal, and follow the call to share God's love with all!

Come experience our spiritual community!
For us, church is about gathering as people on our spiritual journeys to include, support, respect, and love one another as Christ teaches us. "Church" is a shared, heart-centered experience where we welcome all. Read more about our inclusive church here.

On Sunday mornings, we pray, read, sing, and reflect on scripture as we strive to embrace unity consciousness in a broken world. We share a holy meal and celebrate the presence of the Divine among and in us.
Learn more about inclusivity and unity in The Episcopal Church:
Please watch The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde's homily, offered at the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the National Cathedral on January 21, 2025.

You can read the
full text of her homily and a special message about her homily from our bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i, the Rt. Rev. Robert Fitzpatrick.

Why we are here - our mission

LOVE — At St. Augustine's, we come together to nurture and share God's love inside and outside the church walls. It's a simple yet profound mission.
INCLUSIVITY— Because we yearn for a more loving world, we are learning to follow Jesus' teachings, seeking to embody the radical inclusivity he showed us.
HOPE & FAITH — Actively acknowledging the good in people builds our hope. Recognizing that everyone carries the Divine within strengthens our faith. Our conversations and our working together helps each of us open more deeply to the light of Christ that resides in our own hearts.
SPIRITUAL JOURNEY — As followers of the Way of Love, we make promises to God, ourselves, and humanity. The path is different for everyone, but we're on the journey together, practicing each day. These promises (our baptismal covenant) are beacons that guide us, calling us to love and serve all people, regardless of differences.

Serving as good stewards

Stewardship means taking care of that which is entrusted to us: our church family, our community, our beautiful church buildings, and the land we care for through the generosity and faithfulness of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, whose vision of love and unity lives on in the work of the churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i.

Support our mission
Please consider helping us with OUR MISSION to partner with the people of North Kohala to be a community of people who love one another and all creation!
GIVE to St. Augustine's
Your gift helps our community!
Contributions to St. Augustine's help us continue our work to support the North Kohala community in these important ways:
  • St. Augustine's Food Preservation Workshops help boost food sustainability in North Kohala. We are building a program to teach a variety of canning techniques, allowing residents to preserve meats and fresh produce. If you garden, hunt, or fish, sign up to learn how to can foods safely using tested recipes!
  • Our Thrift Shop offers clothing and household goods that people need at very reasonable prices. This is a crucial service to our community, serving many who cannot travel out of town, those who need to provide for their families on a budget, and people looking for new treasures. Items sold at our shop are not taken to the transfer station, which is better for our planet!
  • The Youth Program at St. Augustine's gathers children of all ages for Sunday School and for activities such as nature hikes and Teen Night. Our program is led by our talented Youth Director, Kathy Matsuda.
  • The St. Augustine's College Support Fund provides crucial support for our youth members who are continuing their education at a college, university, or trade school. Funds help students with costs such as books, materials, tools, and supplies needed for learning.
  • Outreach programs at St. Augustine's serve members of our community under the direction of our Outreach Team. St. Augustine's is one of only a few parishes in the diocese that have a deacon, and Deacon Lani's work with families through her role at Tutu & Me allows us to partner with many community programs.
  • Our livestreamed services offer the blessing of gathering in community to those who cannot attend in person.
  • Tiny Church Concerts offer music performed by local and guest musicians. From gospel choir to folk music, we have hosted a wide variety of groups! Subscribe to our newsletter for our concert schedule or check our Facebook page for up-to-date listings. You can also head to our Events Calendar to see who's playing next. If you missed a concert, join our YouTube channel to view.
Please consider making a contribution in any amount to help us continue these ministries. No gift is too small! Mahalo for your support!
